Ford Focus Saloon 1.6 16v 100 Ghia

Only available in expensive trim levels. Intrusive levels of road noise. Low-speed ride is on the firm side.



Performance

Two petrol engines are available - there's a 99bhp 1.6 and a pokier 143bhp 2.0. Both are available with an automatic gearbox, but it can sap performance. Diesel buyers have three choices - the 108bhp 1.6 has enough go for most, but if you want more performance you can have a 113bhp 1.8 or a 134bhp 2.0.

Ride & handling

The Focus has a firm low-speed ride. However, it's still able to soak up the worst of urban streets. At higher speeds, ride quality is excellent. Tenacious grip, wonderful body control and sharp steering make the Focus class leader in this area.

Refinement

All petrol engines are quiet and smooth, even when worked hard. The diesels, however, betray themselves with a fair amount of mechanical clatter under hard acceleration. Curiously, the Focus saloon produces more road noise than the equivalent hatchback, particularly over coarser surfaces. Wind noise, too, is not as well isolated as in many rivals at motorway speeds.

Buying & owning

The Focus saloon is only available in the range-topping Titanium trim, so although it's well equipped you'll pay for the privilege. It should be reasonable to run though, thanks to modest insurance premiums, cheap servicing and affordable leasing costs. Small saloons are unloved by hatchback-mad UK buyers so residual values will fall short of those commanded by the more popular three- and five-door models.

Quality & reliability

The Focus appears to be well screwed together, but hard, cheap-looking plastics have been used for the lower reaches of the cabin and the centre console. Still, Ford has a decent reliability record and there's nothing to suggest that the engines and mechanicals won't prove hardy.

Safety & security

All Focus saloons get six airbags and an electronic stability programme, so you and your family will be well protected. Encouragingly, the Focus hatch was awarded five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests. DEadlocks help keep thieves out, while a visible VIN and marked mechanical parts make it easier to trace a stolen Focus.

Behind the wheel

The dash is a paragon of simplicity and clearly laid out. The driving position is excellent and the driver's seat height is adjusted using a simple ratchet lever, while reach and rake adjustment for the steering wheel helps most people find the ideal driving position. All of the controls work with the light, accurate precision we expect of a Focus.

Space & practicality

The Focus is one of the widest cars in its class so there's plenty of shoulder room front and back. There's also good headroom and an airy feel to the rear of the cabin. Even with the split-folding seats in place, boot space is generous and it's a practical, rectangular shape with no irritating intrusions.

Equipment

Every Focus saloon comes with the full set of goodies. You'll get alloy wheels, air-conditioning, automatic lights and wipers, privacy glass, a cooled glovebox and a chrome grille.
