Ford Galaxy MPV 1.8 TDCi 100 LX

For:
The Galaxy drives well and rides comfortably. It's also refined, and has a spacious, flexible interior.

Against:
There's a large price premium over the S-Max, and limited luggage space with seven on board. Some useful equipment costs extra, too.

Performance

There are two petrol engines, a 143bhp 2.0 and a 159bhp 2.3. The diesels will be the more popular choices, though, thanks to their more frugal fuel consumption. Performance from the 123bhp 1.8 diesel is reasonable, but it tends to have an all-or-nothing power deliver. We prefer the extra punch given by the 138bhp 2.0 TDCi.

Ride & handling

The Galaxy isn't as sharp a drive as the S-Max it's related to, because of its slightly softer suspension and extra height, but it still handles and steers well for a big MPV. The ride is generally compliant and comfortable; even large bumps fail to unsettle the Galaxy's fine composure.

Refinement

The large glass area creates some wind noise at speed, but at least road and suspension noise are well shut out. Most of the engines are quiet enough, too, although the 1.8-litre diesel can be a bit raucous at times.

Buying & owning

The Galaxy is comparable on price to rivals such as the Citroà«n C8, but you won't get such spectacular discounts on the list price. Carbon dioxide emissions and fuel economy aren't brilliant, but the diesels return at least 43mpg on average. Resale values are good - you'll get back around 45% on a 2.0 TDCI 140 after three years and 36,000 miles.

Quality & reliability

The interior is stylish and solidly built, there are plenty of appealing, soft-touch materials on the top of the dashboard and the doors. Lower down and further back, the plastics aren't as attractive, however. IFord's reliability record has been improving in recent years, so the Galaxy should prove dependable.

Safety & security

The Galaxy has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. There are front and side airbags for the two front seats, plus a driver's knee 'bag, while window 'bags run the length of the cabin. Anti-lock brakes are standard, but stability control with emergency brake assist is an option. An alarm and deadlocks deter thieves.

Behind the wheel

The driving position isn't as bus-like as some MPVs', but you still sit pretty high. Even so, the seats and steering wheel feature plenty of adjustment, so most drivers will be able to make themselves comfortable. The dashboard is conventionally styled and clear. Visibility is compromised slightly by the four front pillars.

Space & practicality

There's no need to remove any of the Galaxy's seats to maximise luggage space, because all five rearmost seats fold flat. There's ample headroom all round and enough legroom for seven adults. In five-seat mode there's a massive, well-shaped boot, but when the rearmost pair are raised, there's only space for a couple of small bags.

Equipment

There are three trim levels. Edge cars have air-con, a CD player, electric front windows and a heated windscreen, but you need to step up to Zetec trim to add electric rear windows, alloy wheels, climate control and electric driver's seat adjustment. Ghia models get a CD changer, automatic lights and wipers, a sun-reflecting windscreen, ambient lighting and air-conditioning for the rear, and front and rear parking sensors.
