Motability

Seat Toledo Hatchback 1.6 Reference

For:
The Toledo is pleasant easy to drive. It's also quiet, refined, spacious and practical

Against:
It looks odd, has blindspots in the rear vision, and it looks pointless next to the Altea XL

Performance

The engine range consists of 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol units and 1.9 and 2.0 turbodiesels. The 2.0-litre models are the best bet if you plan to do regular motorway journeys or ferry a family and its paraphernalia around. Best of all is the 138bhp 2.0 turbodiesel, which has much more pulling power than the 147bhp direct-injection 2.0 petrol.

Ride & handling

The Toledo is pleasant if unexciting to drive. It's comfortable, smooth and safe - pretty much everything you'd want in a family car - but despite those sporty looks, the new Seat doesn't encourage enthusiastic driving.

Refinement

In town, the 1.9 diesel engine makes itself known in the cabin, although it becomes quieter at higher speeds. The 1.6 petrol needs to be worked hard on the motorway but remains quiet. The other engines are refined, while wind and road noise is well suppressed.

Buying & owning

Prices are competitive in this sector, particularly given the amount of kit fitted as standard. A three-year, 60,000-mileage warranty is part of the standard package. Fuel, servicing and insurance costs are reasonable right across the range.

Quality & reliability

It's too early for an accurate reliability assessment, but if the Altea is anything to go by, the Toledo should hold together extremely well. The engines all come from the VW Golf range and should present no reliability worries.

Safety & security

Every car comes with twin front and side airbags, plus curtain airbags that run the length of the cabin. Anti-lock brakes with emergency brake assist and traction and stability control systems are also fitted as standard, along with a collapsible pedal box to minimise injuries in the event of an accident. An alarm and deadlocks are on the list of standard equipment.

Behind the wheel

There's plenty of space up front, and the driver gets a steering wheel that adjusts for both height and reach, as well as a height-adjustable seat. The controls are all logically allocated and there is plenty of stowage space around the cabin for any odds and ends. There are some nasty blind spots, however, particularly when reversing.

Space & practicality

The Toledo is 200mm longer than Seat's Altea MPV and although it offers similar cabin space, its boot capacity is 111 litres greater with the rear seats in place. The load area is easy to extend, thanks to the simple folding action that drops the unevenly split rear seats almost flat. Like in the Altea, the floor can be folded back to reveal a concealed stowage space underneath. The parcel shelf also has a lower level to house small items out of view.

Equipment

All Toledos come in a single trim level, called Stylance. You get plenty of kit for your cash, such as climate control, cruise control, alloy wheels, four electric windows and an electric sunroof. Options include Bluetooth phone connection, xenon headlamps and a satellite-navigation system.
