New 2018 Ford EcoSport (facelift)

Despite being the nation’s best-selling car manufacturer, with family favourites such as the Fiesta and Focus consistently topping the sales rankings year after year, Ford has never been a producer to stick with predictable designs and has a reputation for exploring the innovative and cutting edge to the limit.

This is very much the case with the new EcoSport. The compact SUV is one of the most exciting sectors in motoring, and this all new entrant is certain to shake up the industry even more.

The Tardis effect

The first thing you notice about the EcoSport is that, in this age when many cars are looking heavy and bloated, this compact SUV really does live up to its name. Until that is, you get inside. Rear legroom is surprisingly impressive, and four adults can travel in style and comfort without the need for a chiropractor after long journeys.

The ingenious use of space also extends to the boot, where a side-opening tailgate provides easy access. This feature was originally designed for overseas markets, where poor road quality means a full-size spare is necessarily mounted on the back. For the UK, however, it was decided after consultation with customers to do away with this to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics. So instead of a spare, the car comes with a can of instant puncture repair.

Engine options

The new EcoSport will come with two engine options. The 1.0 litre 3 cylinder EcoBoost engine is turbocharged and packs a real punch. Alternatively, there is a 2.0 litre normally aspirated version. Both come with a six-speed automatic transmission and the 2.0 litre has intelligent four wheel drive. Both versions have four wheel disc brakes, meaning they stop as impressively as they go.

If you like your toys, you will love the EcoSport. A four-inch floating touch-screen comes as standard, and this can be upgraded to a six-inch or eight-inch version if you wish. The electronic wizardry available to this model is truly awesome:

  • SYNC 3 is a driver connectivity system that can be used with the FordPass mobile app to locate, lock or unlock the car from practically anywhere. It also gives you instant access to important information such as fuel level and mileage.
  • BLIS stands for Blind Spot Information System and uses sensors to warn you of approaching traffic in your blind spots. It also watches out for approaching vehicles when you are reversing out of a parking space.
  • Smartphone connectivity is available through Apple and Android connectivity systems, which provide additional voice control possibilities.
  • Fast USB charging is available via two ports. There are also two conventional power outlets, a 110-volt and a 12-volt.
