Dear SMC - Handy tips for safe Winter motoring
Don’t us Brits just love to moan about the weather?! This country’s variable weather conditions can make driving hazardous so our resident SMC Agony Aunt (or Uncle) is here to help you through those winter months.
How do I fully prepare my vehicle for winter?
Have your vehicle fully serviced and anti-freeze tested. Check your lights and that your battery is fully charged. You don’t want to be caught out with a faulty battery and they do tend to let you down at the most inconvenient time. Finally make sure your screen wash concentration is correct to prevent the solution from freezing, keeping your windscreen clear. If you‘d like more information on our FREE winter health check, call your local SMC dealership.
What should I have with me in the car to keep me safe?
The list is endless, but here are the essentials:
First Aid Kit
Hazard Warning Triangle
High Visible Jacket
Liquids to drink ( hot and cold - but no alcohol)
Mobile phone and charger
How do I drive more safely in snow and ice?
First things first, make sure you check the weather report before you set out. If you are caught in the snow make sure you can see clearly out of your mirrors and windscreen at all times (your heater blowing warm air will keep the windscreen clear) and that you increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front. Smooth use of your vehicles controls will reduce your risk of skidding and most importantly DON’T RUSH AND KEEP YOUR SPEED DOWN. Switch on your headlights and switch off distracting noises such as the radio/Bluetooth. In the unfortunate event that you do break down or have an accident inform the police and get off the road as soon as possible. If you would like to know more about our Customer Support Programme, call your local SMC dealership.
What’s the difference between winter and standard tyres?
Ahh, good question - did you know that at temperatures under 7 degrees standard tyres lose grip and performance? A set of winter tyres will improve your braking distance, increase your grip on the road and improve steering. Tyres are the only part of your car that are in contact with the road surface – your safety depends on it.
