Motability Eligibility Explained from SMC Group in Kent, Berkshire & London

People eligible for the Motability scheme enjoy lots of benefits. In exchange for your mobility allowance, you can drive a new car for three years and up to 60,000 miles. The car can be perfectly adapted to suit your individual needs and many costs are built in, such as insurance and breakdown cover.

Not all disabled people are eligible for the scheme. You must receive one of four mobility allowances, and have at least 12 months left on the award.

The four allowances include:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HMRC DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

If you are disabled and unable to drive, you may be able to use your allowance to get a car for a carer or family member to help you. The car can still be adapted if you need more stowage space for a mobility aid or extra support getting into the car.

The team at SMC is here to help you through the scheme. If you are unsure whether you are eligible, get in touch over the phone or come along to your nearest showroom to chat to us. We can let you know more about eligibility and give you extra information on how the scheme works.

If you are not eligible, we can still help you purchase a car that’s safe and easy for you to drive. It’s best to visit us to speak to our team in person so they can advise you.
