Known as WAVs, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles allow disabled people to travel in a car or drive without having to get out of their wheelchair. They come in all different shapes and sizes from various manufacturers.
Many disabled people opt for transfer plates, swivel seats or hoists as adaptations to help them get into their car with ease. For some people, it makes more sense to stay in their wheelchair as they get into the car.
WAVs are fitted with various entry supports including ramps or lifts to make it easier and safer for you to get into the car. These can be for the back or side, depending on where you plan on sitting.
If you would like to choose a WAV as your main mode of transport, you may be able to get the car through the Motability scheme. This would allow you to drive, or have a carer or family member drive a WAV in return for your mobility allowance. If the cost extends your allowance, you can pay the extra through a down payment or monthly instalments to get the car that is most suitable to you.
We are happy to help you find a WAV that meets your requirements and guide you through the various finance options, as well as the Motability scheme. Visit your nearest SMC showroom to discuss your options, or contact us over the phone or online using the enquiry form to arrange an appointment.
