Introducing the all-new Ford Mustang

Ever since the unveiling of the latest Ford Mustang at last year's Detroit Motor Show, excitement has been building for its arrival. This iconic model has a big reputation – and a 50-year history – to live up to, after all. Thankfully, all the early signs are extremely promising, and from the information that is available about this version, it seems as though the hype is justified.

What improvements have been made to the design?

The 2015 Mustang doesn't look too dissimilar from the previous edition, although a number of subtle improvements are evident. Taking its cue from the manufacturer's Evos concept (which was showcased at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show), the new Mustang features a more streamlined body shape. This means that the retro-style body of the fifth generation has been largely done away with, although the famous 'vertical bar' tailgate at the rear remains.

Has the interior been changed?

The new Mustang features an extensively redesigned interior. Ford appears to have gone all-out to create a sense of oneness with the road. Reportedly drawing influences from the aeronautical industry, the plane-like cabin of the new Mustang is noticeably larger than that of the previous edition. Continuing the theme of looking forward to the future, the dashboard features a combination of traditional analogue dials and high-tech digital displays, which will allow the driver to remain informed while enjoying the benefits of modern technology.

Aesthetics are all well and good, but the Mustang is all about raw power. What's the situation with the engine?

The previous Mustang featured a variety of V6 and V8 engines, which - as you would expect - generated plenty of horsepower. The new edition certainly doesn't disappoint in this regard: with a choice of either a 3.7-litre V6 or 5.0-litre V8 unit, the car will reportedly be outputting up to a staggering 500bhp.

The big surprise this time around comes in the form of a 2.3-litre turbo charged EcoBoost unit, which certainly bucks the trend when it comes to the Mustang's engine range. EcoBoost technology has won awards for fuel economy in the past, and some may be questioning its place in the traditionally gas-guzzling Mustang. When you consider, however, that this particular EcoBoost engine will have a power output of up to 305bhp while significantly reducing fuel consumption, there will be little to complain about.

What technological innovations are on offer?

Ford is keen to stress the forward-thinking nature of the new Mustang, so it's no surprise to see some of the latest driving technologies make their way into the new Mustang. The interior, for example, features an eight-inch infotainment touch-screen, which will include sat nav functionality (exclusive to the European version). It's also the first Mustang to feature the Ford SYNC hands-free communication system, along with a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Intelligent Access with a push-button start.

When can we expect to see the Mustang on UK roads?

The new Ford Mustang is set for release in the UK in the summer of 2015. To stay informed about this exciting new development in the history of Ford, be sure to check the SMC Ford blog regularly.
